Welcome to my Ask Andy page! This is your opportunity ask me the burning questions that are on your mind – and they can be about anything you want advice on!

hey Andy. ….I slept with my boyfriend with out using protection nd 2days after I went on my periods which is a bit strange coz it was rather early for my periods …..now I’m worried if it possible to get pregnant
There are a number of reasons you could bleed after having sex – and it isn’t usually a sign of pregnancy.
If you are on contraception, such as the pill, it is possible to have a ‘breakthrough’ bleed meaning that your period comes too early, due to changing levels of hormones – in particular, the hormones estrogen and progesterone – in your body. This can also happen if you aren’t on any contraception – your body naturally has changing hormone levels, and this can cause occasionally causing bleeding and spotting.
Local issues can cause some bleeding as well – for example, your cervix has lots of blood vessels that can easily break and cause bleeding after sex – otherwise, something like an inflamed cervix, or polyps (which are quite common), can cause bleeding too.
If this is the first time this has happened, and you don’t have any other symptoms (such as severe pain), I wouldn’t worry too much and I would advise you to wait and see if it happens again next month. If it does happen again, it’s best to see your gynaecologist for a check-up. If you are due for a pap smear, that would be a great time to get one done too!
After all this, if you’re still concerned that you might be pregnant, the best thing to do right now is wait. If you miss your next period, do a pregnancy test (they are extremely accurate), and you can take it from there.
